I've Got This Burning Question...

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 9, 2007, 5:21 PM
UPDATE TO JOURNAL

I've seen several fan art entries here on DA, in which the artist(s) rendered their idea of how the Imaginary Friends characters from "Foster's Home From Imaginary Friends" would look if they were humans. Now, most of you who've kept up with my DA page know that I'm a HUGE fan of that show, and especially a fan of Wilt. In virtually EVERY single piece of "humanized Foster's characters" art I've seen, though, Wilt is almost inevitably(with one or two known exceptions) depicted as a dorky, scrawny WHITE teenage boy of about 15 or so. Can someone please tell me WHY?
First, let's consider Wilt's chronological age. We know, from having seen "Good Wilt Hunting", that Wilt is in his '30's, so he's not a teenager from that standpoint. Wilt was created to be a coach, a mentor, and subconciously, a father figure to a young boy who apparently didn't have a real father to serve in that capacity, which is why Wilt is by far the most adult-acting and mature of the main Imaginary Foster's characters, and it also accounts for why he often displays very strong paternal behavior towards the others. In other words, he not only is way too old to be considered a teenager, but he doesn't ACT like one, either. Now, I know some of you are bristling already, and before you choke on Skittles, let me explain that I know there are plenty of mature-acting teens, although the girls in those ranks FAR outnumber the boys, and I know from experience; I'm a Jr. High school teacher by profession. I've encountered maybe one 15-year-old boy out of oh, 2,000-that acted as mature as Wilt does. There is just nothing in his behavior that suggests "TEENAGE BOY" to me, an adult who'se observed more teens than most folks will ever meet in their entire lives.

Second, why a WHITE guy? We know that Imaginary Friends and their creators are related, genetically, though exactly HOW is not known, and we know that Wilt was created by an African-American child, living in a largely African-American inner-city neighborhood. While Wilt does not sound "ghetto" or speak street slang, but sounds quite erudite and articulate, he most definately does have a distinctly "ethnic" accent that is actually very close to the "Geechee" dialect of the Carolina "Low Country". I'm not at all trying to stereotype, far from it, but I just cannot picture Wilt as Caucasian if he was human, sorry. I dunno-maybe the notion of a beloved character that so many young girls(and some of us not-so-young ones, lol) find attractive, or dare I say, sexy(whether they'll admit it or not)-as a tall, sinewy, athletic thirty-something Black guy with a scarred face, a missing left eye and an amputated arm is somehow too threatening, so they prefer to think of him as a pigeon-chested, awkward White teenage boy. Me, I picture a "human Wilt" as looking a lot like a somewhat-younger version of the character "Warrick Brown", on "CSI", with that somewhat wistful countenance of his, someone who seems to hide behind a troubled past, or perhaps a slightly more serious(and TALLER) version of "Darnell Turner" of "My Name is Earl" fame(aka "Crabman", aka "Rubberband Man" of the Staples commercials). It doesn't bother me in the least, but I cannot for the life of me picture Wilt as a barely-pubescent White kid with a growth-hormone overload.

Anyone care to share with me their thoughts on this uh, phenomenon?

You know, I just google image searched Black Rat Snake and then Texas Rat Snake and I think you're right!! The man who sold him to me as a baby (~15 years ago) told me he was a Black Rat and I never thought twice... But I think you're right, he looks much more like a Texas Rat! Thanks for the comment!

I hope you will explain the meaning of word "mikawa" to the United States :) People should know the name of their every-day saviour. I see we both like snakes. I have two of them and they are crazy creatures.

Google is your friend...most of the time. I'm glad you looked them up, although you will get more factual info and less B.S. if you avoid using slang, local names, like "camel spider" and look up scientific names, like SOLFUGID, instead. The picture the guy showed was STILL a FAKE-anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop or other photo editing software could produce such a picture. I could make it appear that I'm holding a two-inch-tall Pit Bull Terrier in the palm of my hand if I wanted to, or graft Rosy O'Donald's head onto George Bush's body(EWWWWW!!) quite easily, so it's no big deal to make it appear that two humongous creatures are hanging from a gun barrel. It's easy to do without Photoshop, just by taking advantage of perspective. You cannot always assume that a photo is the honest truth. Solfugids are NOT venomous, so if they got loose in an audience, a bunch of stupid ignoramuses would panic and run around screaming like little girls because of the sensationalism just heaped on them by the media and the internet, and eventually someone would just stomp on the poor things(the Solfugids, NOT the stupid people, who oughta get stomped). The only human injuries would be from other people.

I've held a live Solfugid in my hand, and it just sat there. They can run really fast, and have naturally very short lifespans, so I don't keep them, but if they lived a bit longer I'd have a few, guaranteed. Urban legends and media sensationalism do not impress me. We DO have these in North America, by the way; they are quite common in our Southwestern deserts, so you don't have to travel to the Middle East to find them.

This was on "The Today Show" or one of those...the things were live on the stage...they had no hair, were tan like sand with long legs and big bodies and they had their fangs or at least their faces locked together...I believe the guy said they try to tire each other out!!!
What I saw was not a hoax...I remember thinking "What would happen if these things got into the audience???"
The guy also showed pictures of these things hanging from the barrel of his weapon...
I know I saw this...I wonder what they could have been?????

This is a well-known "Urban Legend", a hoax, in other words. "Camel Spiders" are not spiders at all, but a non-venomous family of arachnids called Solfugids. They will defend themselves with a painful pinch from their chelicerae if they have no other recourse, but are NOT "vicious" or "aggressive" and do not go after people. The pictures shown have been Photoshopped, in the photo you mentioned, since that species only reaches about 3 inches in length, hardly bigger than an Amazon tarantula.

Recently on TV I saw an Iraq War Veteran who had some HUGE tan colored spiders he called "Camel Spiders"!!!
He said they are in the desert...the two he had were locked in combat with each other...he said they always fight each other and the locals bet on them, sort of like Cockfights or Dogfights!!!
Do you know anything about them and if so could you please steer me to where I could learn more about them???
The Vet said they are vicious, fearless and very aggressive...and like I said, they are huge...look even bigger than those big Tarantulas found in the Amazon Jungle!!!!

I did actually respond back in June '07, that this was a dark color-phase Tiger Snake(Notechis ater). In more mountainous and cool areas of their range, they tend to be much darker in color and lack the characteristic bands that give them the common name, since dark colors absorb and retain heat more efficiently. It's the same with out Copperheads(a pit viper, totally different and unrelated to your Australian Copperheads)-the Northern Copperhead found in the Appalachian Mountains tends to be a dark brown snake, while the Southern variant that we have where I live tends to be a pale salmon-pink or tan snake with rust-brown markings. It's a lot cooler up in the mountains, so those snakes need to be darker to absorb sunlight better.
