This is one of four alligators that were found trapped inside a huge cement vat, once used by 19'th-century slaves on Friendfield Plantation to render fish into fertilizer for the rice paddies. This is one of the biggest 'gators I've ever seen, bar none! This head is approximately 3 1/2, or one meter, in length from the end of its snout(not visable as it was against the wall of the vat)and the back of its head, which means that the entire animal is probably over 12 feet in length! My car's steering wheel could have sat neatly between its eyes. Alligators periodically fall into this vat in search of other animals that fall in, like possums, and usually can climb back out, but the water level was down too low due to a drought. The groundskeeper has to lower a "gator ladder", a ramp made of shipping pallets, into the rank water for the animals to climb out. I was worried about this guy, though; I was actually only a few feet from him, within striking distance if he'd wanted to eat me, yet other than the slight movement in-and-out of his chest as he breathed, he did not react to me at all. Another alligator nearby had already died, so help might have come too late for this big boy as well. I hope he made it out OK on his own. If he didn't, then the groundskeepers would have to rope him and pull him out, and it would take several strong men to lift THIS guy!
We don't know how long they'd been in there because no one had checked the fish vats in several weeks. I do know that they got the gators out later that day, though, using the "gator ladder"(as described). I don't know if they went through with plans to blast a hole in the vats so they wouldn't hold water, so animals couldn't fall in and drown, but then, the vats are still deep, and most animals couldn't get out without help. It would probably make more sense just to leave the pallet ladder in place permanently. I hate the thought of animals falling in and drowning or starving, but I don't like the idea of blowing up such a rare part of history, either.

Okay this is getting a bit repetative. I love all animals. End of story.
