Eastern Cottonmouth

Description

This is a big female Cottonmouth(Agistrodon piscivorus), or Watern Moccasin, in captivity at the Edisto Island Serpentarium in Edisto, South Carolina. These hefty pit vipers have a nasty, and really undeserved, reputation for being aggressive. I've yet to see one that did not act as though it was trying to evolve into a log. That does not mean they can be trifled with, as they CAN kill you or leave you physically scarred for life, but of the countless Cottons I've encountered, I've never yet had one "go after me", as people claim they do.

This is absolutely gorgeous! The detail and lighting are both stunning and perfect. Everything came out so clearly I could probably count all the scales visible in this shot very easily. The coloring is excellent, especially on the snake itself. I love the look on her face, it's cute yet primeval-looking. It looks like she's interacting with you. You did this snake proud with this photo.

Until now, I had no idea "Cottonmouth" was another name for a Water Moccasin. I've heard they'd rather flee than fight. The ones that "go after" people are usually Pygmies and non-venomous species, in my experience.
