Red-Phase FL Green Water Snake

Description

This is a lovely sub-adult male rare red-phase Florida Green Water Snake(Nerodia floridiana)that a friend of mine picked up for me in south Florida on a recent trip. Normally these are a dull, greenish-black or greenish-brown color, but in a small area of southern Florida, these crimson red specimens occur. This guy is about two feet long, and is a bottomless pit when it comes to food! I wish my big adult female FL Green was like that, but she is pickier when it comes to her food and will only eat live fish. This male will eat anything-cut fish, mice, you name it-if you offer it on tongs.

Question. I have seen something like this fellow in our backyard. I am having a difficult time telling if he is this or a red corn/rat snake. He nor I wish to get too close of a look at each other. Are there any distinguishing actions that may be more so one species than the other? Either way I believe it to be harmless. But I do have pets that could either kill it or get struck by it. Is it possible for it to be a poisonous species? All the pics I have seen on line of a dark reddish orangey brown snake, is that of a rat or corn snake. Until I saw your pic that is. So, better safe than sorrow, right. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
